Product demo video best practices: a 12-point checklist

By , 11 October 2026

Most demo videos fail in the same few ways: they start slowly, try to show everything, and only make sense with the sound on. This checklist covers the fixes, in the order you'll need them.

Before you record or produce anything

  1. Pick one viewer. A prospect on your landing page, a lead after a sales call and a new user in onboarding need different videos.
  2. Pick one job. Show one workflow from start to result, not the whole product.
  3. Use realistic data. Real-looking names, numbers and content, never "Test User" or lorem ipsum. Empty states make products look empty.
  4. Clean the screen. Hide notifications, bookmarks, other tabs and anything personal.

In the video

  1. Show the result in the first five seconds. People decide almost immediately whether to keep watching.
  2. Fit the length to the place. Under a minute for social and landing pages, where videos average a 52% engagement rate in Wistia's data, and one to five minutes for walkthroughs meant to educate (Wistia). More in how long a demo video should be.
  3. Make it work muted. Browsers always allow muted autoplay but restrict autoplay with sound (Chrome for Developers), so a lot of viewers will see your demo silently. Put the key phrases on screen.
  4. Guide the eye. Zoom into the part of the screen that matters, move the cursor slowly and deliberately, and leave each important screen up long enough to read.
  5. Say what's different once. One sentence on why this beats the alternative, near the end, is worth more than adjectives throughout.
  6. End on an action. Your address, a free trial or a booking link, on screen for the last few seconds.

Before you publish

  1. Set it up to play. On a web page, a looping demo needs to be muted and, for Safari, marked playsinline (MDN Web Docs). A poster image keeps the first frame from flashing blank. See putting a product video on your landing page.
  2. Watch it on a phone, muted, once. If you can't follow it that way, neither can most viewers.

Why it's worth the care

In Wyzowl's 2026 survey, 63% of people said they'd most like to learn about a product from a short video, far ahead of a text article at 12% (Wyzowl). A demo is often the first real look someone gets at your product.

Where Teasr fits

Teasr covers the short, branded overview: it reads your website and makes a 15 to 60-second motion video with your real screens, colours and copy, plus music, in about 10 minutes, from €19.50. It doesn't record your app, so for a click-by-click walkthrough of a logged-in flow, record your screen. Examples are in the gallery.
