Which post formats perform best organically in 2026?
Video is not an automatic winner: swipeable multi-image posts lead engagement on Instagram and LinkedIn, Reels lead on Facebook, link posts trail everywhere, and video's clearest edge is reaching people who don't follow you yet.

On Instagram, the format that wins is the carousel. Socialinsider, drawing on 35 million Instagram posts, found that in the second quarter of 2026 carousels averaged a 0.50% engagement rate, Reels 0.48% and single images 0.33%, and that carousels also take the top spot for views at every account size, helped by Instagram resurfacing a carousel with a different slide when someone scrolls past it 1. Rival IQ, working from more than 4 million posts in its 2025 report, independently found that carousels outperformed Reels in engagement 2. Static images are the format in decline, with engagement down 17% year on year 1.
Engagement rates measured against followers miss what video is good at, which is reaching strangers. Instagram says that in Reels, as in Explore, the majority of what people see comes from accounts they don't follow 3. A carousel mostly deepens your relationship with an audience you already have, while a Reel is one of the few organic ways to be put in front of a new one.
LinkedIn shows the same pattern with different numbers. Across 1.3 million business posts in the second quarter of 2026, multi-image posts averaged a 6.90% engagement rate, native documents 6.60%, video 5.90%, single images 5.20%, text 3.95% and link posts 3.30% 4. Socialinsider also recorded a 36% year-on-year decline in LinkedIn video views 4, so video there is solid but no longer special.
Facebook is the exception where video leads. In 25 million posts, Reels remained the most engaging format in the second quarter of 2026 at 0.13%, while link posts held at 0.05% 5. Between platforms the gaps are much larger than between formats: TikTok's engagement rate by followers averages 2.60% in Socialinsider's 2026 data, against 0.45% for Instagram and about 0.15% for Facebook 6.
For a small team the practical reading is that the plain link post, often the default for announcing something, is the weakest format on both Facebook and LinkedIn. Turning the same message into a short video and a few swipeable images covers both the reach and the depth sides of the algorithm.
If you want a short video in that mix without a production budget, Teasr makes a 15 to 60 second clip from your website for €19.50 to €49.50. The data argues for using it alongside carousels and document posts rather than instead of them.
