5 product-video options without a required subscription

You do not need a monthly subscription to make an occasional product video. Options include built-in recording, free editing software, an eligible code-based workflow and paying for an individual finished video. The right route depends on whether you need capture, editing or production.

The five options below are grouped by use. No required subscription does not mean no production effort, and a free tier does not automatically include every feature or asset.

1. OBS Studio for recording

OBS describes itself as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” It is a candidate when your product needs a real screen demonstration. OBS.

You still need a clean demo, a clear sequence and any editing required afterwards. This is a recording tool, not a commissioned launch film.

2. Your Mac's built-in capture tools

Apple documents screen recording through Screenshot or QuickTime. If the brief is a straightforward capture, start with the tools you already have rather than adding a new subscription. Apple screen-recording instructions.

Capture is only the first stage. Review cursor movement, accidental notifications and how much waiting time remains.

3. DaVinci Resolve's free edition for editing

Blackmagic offers Resolve in free and Studio editions. The free edition is a route to consider for assembling recordings, photos and audio without a recurring application payment. DaVinci Resolve.

Choose it because you want an editing environment you can learn and reuse. Do not confuse avoiding a subscription with avoiding the time needed to edit.

4. Remotion where the free license applies

Remotion's licensing FAQ describes eligibility for free use and separate company terms. Check your team's situation before choosing it on price. Remotion license FAQ.

This route can make sense if you want to maintain scenes in code. Model usage, computing and your development time remain separate considerations. It is not an unlimited free production service.

5. Teasr for a pay-per-video motion promo

Teasr is our pick for an occasional branded launch promo when you already have a public website and want to avoid both a subscription and the work of assembling an edit. Individual videos start at €19.50; supply the URL and review the result. Its optional Studio plan is a separate choice.

It does not replace a screen recorder or an editor for footage you already shot. Check the order's duration and revision conditions before comparing a purchase with software access.

Compare the cost of an approved video

Use four columns: cash paid, time spent, rejected drafts and included revisions. Add asset licensing where you use external music, fonts or footage. A cheap first draft can become costly if every correction starts another production pass.

Before paying, make sure the output you need is actually available: the right aspect ratio, acceptable resolution, no unwanted watermark and permission for your intended use. For manual editing choices, see Canva alternatives. For production responsibility, see DIY vs a freelancer.
