How to make a product video from your website (no studio)

By , 24 October 2026

Short answer: decide whether you need a short promo or a longer walkthrough, make sure your landing page already says the one thing the video should say, then either record a screen demo, assemble a clip in an editor, or generate a branded short from your URL. Most founders only need a 15 to 30 second piece for the homepage, a launch post or paid social.

I built Teasr, which turns a website into a short video, so I am biased toward that route when the site is already in good shape. The steps below still work if you never use my tool. For length and pricing on Teasr itself, see pay per video on the homepage.

What kind of product video you actually need

People search "how do I make a video for my product" and then buy the wrong thing. Name the job first:

JobLengthWhat it has to show
Homepage / launch promo15 to 30sProblem, product, one proof, one next step
Paid social / Reels / TikTok15 to 30sHook in the first 1 to 2 seconds, then the product
Feature walkthrough60s to a few minutesReal UI, voice or captions, step by step
Sales / onboarding explainerlongerObjections, who it is for, how it works

A short promo and a screen-recorded walkthrough are different jobs. Mixing them is why a lot of "product videos" feel long and still unclear. If you are specifically making a SaaS promo overview, see also how to make a SaaS promo video without hiring an editor.

Wyzowl's State of Video Marketing research has consistently found that most marketers use video and that explainer-style videos stay among the most common formats. Treat that as a signal that buyers expect video, not as a reason to film a five minute epic. Check the latest Wyzowl report before you quote any single percentage in a pitch deck.

For retention, Wistia's engagement work is a useful rule of thumb: keep the first cut under a minute when the goal is completion, then lengthen only if the landing page cannot carry the rest of the story. See Wistia's video engagement research.

What to fix on your site before you make the video

If the video is going to come from your website, the site is the brief. Fix these first:

  1. One clear headline that a stranger can understand in three seconds.
  2. One product visual that is not a generic stock hero. A real UI shot, product photo or short loop is enough.
  3. One proof point (number of users, a named customer, a concrete result).
  4. One call to action (start free, book a demo, buy credits).

If those four are weak, no tool or freelancer will save the cut. Tighten the page, then make the video. For putting the finished file back on the page, see video on a landing page.

Three ways to make it (pick one)

1. Record the product yourself

Best when the value is "watch me click through the thing."

  • Use OBS (free) or Screen Studio (Mac, smoother cursor and zooms).
  • Write a 5-line script before you hit record.
  • Export 1080p, add captions in CapCut or Descript if you talk.

Limitation: you are the editor. The result can look like a Loom unless you spend time on pacing and sound. More on when recording beats animation: screen recording vs animation and how to record a demo video.

2. Assemble it in a template editor

Best when you already have screenshots, logos and a few clips.

  • Canva, CapCut or similar templates get you to a shareable MP4 fast.
  • Replace every placeholder with your real assets so it does not look like every other template ad.

Limitation: templates look like templates unless someone with taste reworks them.

3. Generate a short branded promo from your URL

Best when you want an on-brand 15 to 60 second piece and your public site already has the copy and visuals.

This is what Teasr does: paste the URL, get a motion video that pulls colours, fonts, copy and product images from the page, with original music. Examples from real sites: cue and tapnoise. Browse more in the gallery.

Limitation: it is for promos, not for narrated feature tours. A thin website produces a thin video.

TikTok for Business guidance for ads still points people toward short cuts (often under a minute) with the payoff early. If you are cutting for Reels or TikTok, show the outcome in the first couple of seconds, then the product. Official overview: TikTok ads creative best practices.

A simple 15 to 30 second structure that works

Use this beatsheet whether you record, edit or generate:

  1. 0 to 2s - hook: the pain or the result, on screen as text.
  2. 2 to 10s - product: what it is, in one sentence, with a real visual.
  3. 10 to 20s - proof or how: one concrete detail (feature, number, before/after).
  4. Last 5s - ask: start free, try it, or visit the site.

If the landing page is strong, a 15 second tease is enough and the page does the converting. If the page is weak, a longer cut will not fix that for long.

Where to put the finished clip

  • Above the fold on the product page (muted autoplay with captions).
  • Launch posts on X, LinkedIn, Product Hunt.
  • Paid social as the creative, with a matching landing page.
  • Sales emails and investor updates as a link, not a 40MB attachment.

Export both landscape (homepage, LinkedIn) and vertical (Reels, TikTok, Shorts) if you can. One master story, two crops, is usually enough.

A fast path if you already have a solid landing page

  1. Tighten headline, visual, proof and CTA on the live site.
  2. Decide promo vs walkthrough.
  3. For a short promo, paste the URL into Teasr and review a first cut, or open Screen Studio / CapCut if you would rather record or assemble it yourself. Current lengths and prices are on the homepage.
  4. Cut to 15 or 30 seconds using the beatsheet above.
  5. Ship it on the homepage and one social channel the same day. Iterate from comments and watch time, not from a perfect brief.

That is the whole loop. You do not need a studio. You need a clear page, a short structure, and one finished file.

FAQ

How do I make a video for my product if I am not a video editor?

Decide promo vs walkthrough first. Tighten your landing page headline, visual, proof and CTA, then either screen-record a short demo (OBS or Screen Studio), assemble a clip in CapCut or Canva, or generate a branded short from your public URL with a tool like Teasr.

How long should a product video be?

For homepage, launch posts and paid social, 15 to 30 seconds is usually enough. Keep a walkthrough longer only when the job is teaching a real UI task. Wistia's engagement work is a useful rule of thumb: prefer under a minute when completion matters.

Do I need a studio or an agency?

Not for a first useful promo. Most founders need a clear page, a simple beatsheet and one finished file. Hire help when you need heavy motion design, live action or a long narrated explainer.

Should I record my product or generate a promo from the website?

Record when the value is watching someone click through a real workflow. Generate or template-edit a short promo when the public site already shows brand, copy and product visuals and you need a 15 to 60 second launch or ads cut.

What should I fix on my website before making the video?

One clear headline, one real product visual, one proof point and one call to action. If those four are weak, the video will be weak no matter which tool you use.

Where should I publish the finished product video?

Above the fold on the product page (muted with captions), launch posts, paid social with a matching landing page, and sales or investor emails as a link. Export both landscape and vertical when you can.
