How to make a Product Hunt launch video
A launch video is optional on Product Hunt, but it plays first in your gallery, so it's the first thing many visitors see. Here's what Product Hunt actually requires, and what makes a launch video work.
Product Hunt's rules for media
- Videos are YouTube links only. Product Hunt doesn't host video: "For videos, only YouTube links are supported." Use the full URL, not a shortened one, and don't leave the video set to private before launch (Product Hunt Help Center).
- Gallery images should be 1270x760, and the gallery needs at least two images before it's viewable (Product Hunt Help Center).
- The thumbnail is best square, at 240x240. GIFs are allowed if they're under 3MB (Product Hunt Help Center).
So the workflow is: make the video as an MP4, upload it to YouTube as unlisted or public, and paste the full link into your gallery.
What to put in it
- Show the product in the first few seconds. Skip long logo intros; many people decide whether to keep watching almost immediately.
- Make it work without sound. Plenty of people browse with sound off, so put the key words on screen.
- One idea, not a feature list. Show the one thing your product does differently, and let the gallery images cover the rest.
- Keep it under a minute. Short videos hold attention best: Wistia found videos under a minute average a 52% engagement rate (Wistia).
- End on the name and the address. People who watch to the end are ready to click.
Making it in minutes
If you don't have days for a launch video, paste your website into Teasr and pick 30 or 60 seconds. It reads your site for your brand, product images and copy, and makes a motion video with music in about 10 minutes, ready to upload to YouTube. It starts at €39, and if it isn't right, you can ask for changes in plain words.
